Complex and pronounced aromatics

Viognier is known for its complex and pronounced aromatics, and our 2022 “Caroline” ~ Viognier is no exception.  This Viognier has an abundance of floral and honeysuckle aromas and tropical fruit flavors. Notes of jasmine, lychee, guava, passionfruit, pineapple, and lemon peel add further complexity, with a hint of white pepper adding a subtle spice. This Viognier is dry and medium-bodied.

History

From RhĂ´ne Valley of France

Viognier is a white grape variety believed to have originated in the RhĂ´ne Valley of France. The grape thrived in the region and was used in the creation of many popular RhĂ´ne wines. Viognier was also grown in other parts of France, including the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region.

During the 20th century, the popularity of Viognier declined as it proved to be difficult to grow and was susceptible to pests and diseases. By the 1960s, the grape was almost extinct, with only a few remaining vines.

In the 1980s, a group of winemakers in California, including Joseph Phelps and Robert Mondavi, began experimenting with Viognier grapes. Following their success, Viognier began to be planted in other wine regions such as Australia, South Africa, South America and California.

Since the 1990s, Viognier has gained in popularity and is now grown worldwide.

Food Pairings

Pair this Viognier with creamy curries like chicken korma, chicken salads with apricot/peach, dishes with coconut, ginger, and saffron, rich shellfish dishes (seared scallops, grilled lobster, linguini with clams), roast pork/chicken, tagines with apricot, and filet mignon with citrus hollandaise sauce (a rare white wine/red meat pairing!)

Awards

The 2022 “Caroline” – Viognier just took home a gold medal at the Winemaker Challenge – International Wine Competition and we could not be prouder as this wine was named after Lynn’s mom Carol who you can find frequently working in the tasting room.
