The Domaine Artefact 2017 Syrah is 100% Syrah of the Alban Clone. It is a full bodied red with aromatics of dark fruits – highlighting blackberries and boysenberry. On the palate, the dark berries give way to a “bacon-spice concoction”. Dried leather makes an appearance, as do dates, dried figs, cinnamon and clove and peppercorn. This mélange closes with a finish of blueberry, blackberry, and peppercorns.
All Syrah fruit was destemmed and fermented in open top containers. Left to macerate on skins for 28 days, pressed and racked to 228-liter French oak barrels. 40% new French oak was employed and 60% neutral French oak; aged for 19 months.
Serving with darker meats and exotic spices brings out the fruit notes of Syrah, like five spice pork, lamb shawarma, and tandoori. Enjoy it with braised short ribs with mushrooms, bacon burger, braised pork belly with mushroom risotto, or rosemary lambchops.
Warm Climate Syrah comes from hotter regions such as Napa, Paso Robles, Argentina, Spain, and South Africa. A bolder Syrah will see a little more new oak aging which adds to its rich texture and sweet tannin finish. Full-bodied Syrah shoots out of the glass and punches you in the nose.
