2016 Vin de Paille

Desert Wine

The 2016 Vin de Paille is both light and luscious in the mouth. It’s not an overly sweet dessert wine and is well balanced, it exhibits aromatics of apple and honeysuckle and with juicy citrus marmalade over, honeysuckle and offers up a lasting juicy finish. One sip and you will be hooked! This wine will pair with foie gras, an après meal cheese plate (especially blue veined cheeses), tiramisu, baked apples/pears, berry tarts and lemon soufflé.
Our “straw wine” is the first dessert wine produced at Domaine. It was painstakingly harvested and laid out on straw mats to desiccate and increase sugar levels to 40 brix before being pressed. Our 2016 Vin de Paille is a 50%/50% blend of Grenache Blanc and Viognier. After pressing, it was aged in MT oak for 2 months then placed in stainless steel barrels to age for 11 months. This wine will age in the bottle for 5-7 years.
Domaine Artefact, San Diego County (California) Estate Vin de Paille 2016 ($38): Winemaker Mark Robinson names this wine for the process, where select fruit clusters are dried on a bed of straw to concentrate sugars without sacrificing acidity. A blend of Grenache Blanc and Viognier from his Highland Valley estate, it features dried apricot, peach, orange blossom, marzipan and spice on a viscous palate tempered with bright acid. The finish is clean and invites you back for more. A fine solo dessert glass.
